What is a Special Needs Advocate?

A special needs advocate is an individual who is knowledgeable about the Special Education and 504 processes, federal and state regulations, and the 13 disability categories.  A good advocate will fully understand and be able to explain what formal assessment results mean and what the implications of those assessment results may be.  In addition, an advocate will fully understand each part of a ARD or 504 plan, how a child will be measured according to that plan and what accommodations/modifications are included within the plan.

A special needs advocate is not an attorney and cannot offer legal advice.  However, they can use their expertise to help parents navigate the unique and challenging world of supports within a school district for children with exceptional needs.
